Prospecting Idaho

Scotty Lago is a beast in this one

Prospecting Idaho Episode #6 from smith optics on Vimeo.

Better in the 80's

Remember back in the day when you would open a surf mag and be amazed at the skills of the surfers on the page, then you would watch the same surfers video parts and wonder why none of the massive punts from the mag were in their parts? Well thats because back then you didnt have to stick the trick to get it run.

Magazines like Waves have tried to eliminate this over the years by running a lot more sequences but you still see companies putting ads in which you find hard to believe were rode out of by the surf star.

Regardless of this on the wave starved beachs of Perth its crazy how much fun can be had with a jet ski to pin at the ankle biters and throw a few cannonballs into oblivion.

We headed down a few days back and I shot a few snaps off the back of Fitzy's ski of Quinten and Fitz and although the majority of the punts were incomplete if it was 10 or 15 years ago I dare say they may have made the cover.

A night at Chips

Jared and I headed over to Chippers house in Alpine Whistler for a bit of box fun and some beers. The night was super fun. Thanks to Chipper and Ariane for having us. Quickly threw this little video together. Hope you enjoy.

XAVIER DE LE RUE - big dawg world exclusive!

So here it is, the second installment of Xavier De Ler Rue's timeline series.

This one is an acid flashback to a trip they did to Greenland. Some amazing scenery to be seen coupled with some textbook hard charging riding.

I'll leave it at that as we have an interview with the man himself to go with the edit, so sit back and read what he has to say while you enjoy the fruits of Greenland. As Coach Gordon Bombay was told in Mighty Ducks 2 by the banging Iceland local, " Iceland is very nice, Greenland is full of Ice!"

Nice

Relatively new web series from German shred Elias Elhardt. This 3rd ep sees him head to China for the Air and Stlye, then a quick surf trip, before heading off to the Arlberg in Austria for some powder that will make you more than a little keen to ride.

Enjoy.

Another epic ep with Chas. On a side note how fucking funny is Scotty Lago. From getting the girl to bite his metal that happens to be hanging out his fly after the olympics to winning a bet and preceding to skull a bottle of tomato sauce. He seems like a real lad.

Xavier de le Rue: Timeline EP1

Those of you who haven't heard the name Xavier de le Rue must of been living under a rock. He is one of the best things in snowboarding right now, specializing in gnarly and creative lines.

Xavier spent the last winter season filming with Standard and Tenton Gravity Research and now Xavier is gearing up for another epic winter again filming with Standard and also filming with Videograss for the first year.

Timeline is the behind the scenes footage of Xavier's winter. If there is one show you follow this year it has got to be this. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

Here is what they had to say about it: "Twice a month TimeLine will get you behind the scenes access to exclusive footage of Xavier de le Rue’s season. You’ll discover what it takes to film a big mountain video part for Standard Films and Videograss, to compete on the Freeride World Tour and what is happening during trips to Canada, Japan, Norway or Alaska. It will show you the team efforts of passionate friends to seek the best lines and best snow and use the best mountains as playground, Guido Perrini as filmer, Tero Repo as photographer and Xavier and his friends as riders. Shot mainly on Canon 7d."

Rob Dyrdek sells his soul. Twat

always a fun thing to do.

This film clip was banned in Australia. For some reason I had never seen it even though this would have to be one of my favorite tunes of the last 10 years. It was brought to my attention this week and it is a banger.

Jake Burton: My life as a pioneer

As mixed the opinions are towards Burton, you cant say there hearts arnt in the right place. Read on to see how a young stock broker from New York helped cement a sport and started the most well known company in snowboarding.

I grew up on Long Island, and I'd always wanted to be a surfer. When the Snurfer [a snowboard forerunner created by Sherman Poppen] came out, it was my form of surfing on snow. I was 14, and from then on, I was convinced there was a sport waiting to happen.

I started Burton six months after graduating from New York University in 1977. I was working for Wall Street investor Victor Niederhoffer and wasn't super-happy. So I started researching how skateboards and skis were made, moved to Vermont, and hired two friends and a relative. I had some money saved, some I'd inherited, and $100,000 from the bank; I lost it all before I knew what had happened. I underestimated the cost and time it would take to get the business going.

We sold only 300 boards in 1979. The ski, skate, or surf shops weren't interested. So I advertised nationally and began selling through mail order. Once I became focused on growing the sport, instead of just getting rich, things took off. People started talking about snowboarding, then the dealers started calling and making orders. Still, financing was an obstacle along the way. We'd hook up with banks for a year or two, then they'd say, "This has got to be a fad," and jump off.

In 1985 my wife, Donna, set up our distribution network in Europe, and Innsbruck, Austria, became our home for three years. It opened my eyes to being a global company.

After 25 years running Burton, Donna and I took a year to travel with our three boys, following winter around the world. We wanted to immerse ourselves in the business from a fresh perspective. Part of that involved letting go of my day-to-day duties, and ultimately the CEO title in 2005. This past May, I made the difficult decision to return as CEO, feeling that I was the best suited for the opportunities and challenges that face Burton. I'm fortunate that I didn't take on shareholders who would expect numbers, or Burton wouldn't be the success it is today. Everything is still in Donna's and my hands. We don't have an exit strategy. In many ways, the company is like our first child. We want to see it have a long, healthy life.

My Advice: "Plan lots of lead time for starting any business. It will take longer than you think, and it will cost more than you imagine.

Back Yard Jiberish

Last night after work I was a little disappointed I hadnt been for a shred in 2 days, so Jared and I got in our gear and headed over the road where John, James and Sammy were kind enough to let us ride there back yard set up. It wasnt the biggest thing Ive ever seen but it was really alot of fun. And the good news is the boys have told us to go hit it when ever we feel and build what ever we want so expect to see more this coming season. The back yard is perfect for it and with the 90+ cm of snow predicted in the next 3 days we should be able to build something pretty cool. Where looking into getting a rail soon too. Here are a few pics from last night.

Just a few pic taken of what I have been up too over the last week or so.

Whistler is slowly getting more snow and the chairs are beginning to open up. What I like about Whistler is that it stays so cold that when you do find somewhere new to ride the snow is still good, even weeks after its powed down. Ive pretty much been riding freshies for the last 11 days. Also Chip and Ariane arrived from there mammoth drive across Canada so winter is starting to feel in full swing. It was good to see that the COS sticker on the Blackcomb xl park stayed intact over the summer too. Stay tuned for more videos in the coming week.

Peace.
